New bar

New bar almost done. It’s made from pallet wood looted from work so it’s not pretty but I’m really happy with it.

This is mk 1, with there likely to be several iterations. Mk 1 is much higher (1000mm) and narrower (430mm) than the table I was using before, which will hopefully reduce the back pain I was getting from bending down to the table surface when pouring, and stretching across the width of the table then straining.

The bar is made of 1 top and 2 leg sections that are attached with bolts for quick assembly (currently screwed together). The front and sides have a fabric cover that is attached with staples on the night. For the top I think I’ll just put MDF on it for now as that’s what I have laying around. The finish will be a quick couple of coats with polyurethane.

MK 2 improvements
  • The length of the top is 1550mm and most sheets come in 600, 1200 or 2400mm long so in future I may reduce the width to 1200mm so I can buy something nice and make 1 cut to finish it.
  • The second rail on the legs is set at that height so a shelf can go in that will work as a speed rack, but I’m not sure where the rubbish and ice are currently going so a shelf might get in the way. We’ll see.
  • The center of gravity is quite high as the bar is pretty narrow. I might increase the width to 500mm next time. Currently the legs may need some weight added to make it super stable, but we’ll see when to top goes on.
After this the plan is to make a companion lower bar section that has an ice station and sink built into it. It would sit at a right angle to the current bar for easy access to ice and mixing tin cleaning.

Bar is now finished! Photos to come.
